Disc Micrometers

Disc micrometers measure the thickness of materials, such as metal or plastic; they can also measure diameters or lengths.

Disc micrometers have a flat anvil that presses against the measured object. The other end of the micrometer is a round measuring plate with a hole through it. A screw turns a screw thread that moves the measuring plate up or down until it touches and lines up with the flat anvil. The depth of this line shows how far apart the two parts are from each other and thus gives you an accurate measurement of their thickness.

The best applications for these micrometers are when measuring something flat and thin. You can also use them for measuring diameters if your material is round, such as a pipe.
