Mechanical Inside Micrometers

Mechanical inside micrometers measure small items, such as screws and bolts. You can use them in many applications, including machine inspection, assembly line production, and robotics. Inside micrometers have several uses, depending on the version you’re looking for.

Inside micrometers can measure up to 100 thousandths of an inch (0.1mm), which is equivalent to measuring 0.0005″ or 0.005mm with other types of tools. Some inside micrometers can measure up to 10 thousandths of an inch (0.01mm). These are “feeler gauges.”

Some mechanical inside micrometers have another name, “capillary gauges.” These devices use a capillary tube to perform their measurement function by applying a small amount of liquid onto the measured part so that it can be pulled along a surface without losing its shape (as it would with water). The measurement takes place after the liquid evaporates off of the measured part.
